What's involved

Learn the editorial process of returning drama
Work in a creative team and grow your network

A one-day workshop in collaboration with ITV Academy for Northern writers looking to forge careers in television writing.

Storyliners are the backbone of returning TV drama, generating story ideas and producing storylines that create rich drama and engaging characters. Film Hub North has now teamed up with ITV Academy to offer a maximum of 20 Northern writers the chance to take part in a one day, in-person, workshop in Manchester, which offers new and emerging writers the chance to experience what it’s like to be a storyliner on a continuing drama.

Led by a team of experienced ITV writers the workshop offers an opportunity to participate in mock story conferences, learn how to structure and write an example returning drama storyline, and offers an insight into the editorial process of returning drama. The day will arm writers with valuable experience of working as part of a creative team and insight into the skills required to be a storyliner at ITV.

This event takes place Thursday 14 March 10:00 - 16:00 and is open to writers based across the North. You must be available on that day and if selected you will be required to do some television viewing beforehand to be up to speed on Coronation Street’s current storylines, which will be referenced during the day.

Who's it for?

This workshop is suitable for writers with prior experience in writing for screen or other drama. This could be in completed short film, theatre, radio, comedy or other forms of writing. Writers should be looking to professionalise their practice and want to develop a career in writing for television.

To be eligible for the workshop you must:

  • Be based in the North of England (see the areas we cover here)
  • Be over 18 and not in full time education
  • Be able to attend the full day workshop on Thursday 14 March from 10:00 - 16:00

If you’re a writer working in a different art form who wants to make the move into screenwriting, check out our Script Lab which will be opening for applicants in Spring. If you already have a more developed idea with an existing script, you might want to consider applying for BFI NETWORK Short Film Funding

Our training programmes support filmmakers to develop their craft and build industry networks both regionally and nationally. While we aim to offer continued support to graduates of our programmes, participation does not guarantee success in receiving BFI NETWORK Film Funding.
