Film Generator is a new two-stage training programme that seeks to support the most exciting early-stage writers and directors in the
North to experiment, find their voice, and develop as storytellers.
STAGE 1: FOR WRITERS - APPLICATIONS CLOSED
Stage 1 is for writers. We’re looking for ideas that use the limitations of micro budget shorts to craft something distinctive, evocative, and compelling. Writers will apply with an idea which - if selected - will receive development support from the Film Hub North team to shape it into a winning short script.
At the application stage we’re looking for a couple of paragraphs that outline the idea, submissions should not include a completed script. Writers should consider the following guidelines:
- max 10 pages
- max 3 characters
- max 2 locations
- ideally 4-7 minutes long
- ideally features characters that could be played by different genders/ages/ethnicities.
Ideas should be innovative, interesting, and have a unique perspective. The best ideas will have something to say and a distinctive way of saying it.
Here is an inspiration list of films we recommend watching not only for their content but also their approaches to character/budget/production limitations:
We expect to select 4 projects for development in this stage. This opportunity is open to anyone based in the North of England who is looking to start a career writing for film. We’re particularly interested in applications from traditionally underrepresented voices.
STAGE 1: TIMELINE
Thursday 15 August: Launch / Stage 1 Open for applications
Monday 16 September: Stage 1 Deadline
Wednesday 25 September: Stage 1 Selection
Monday 30 September - Friday 1 November: Script development
STAGE 2: OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS IN NOVEMBER, FOR DIRECTORS
Stage 2 will be for Directors.
Directors in the North will pitch to work with the scripts supported in Stage 1. We’ll be looking for bold interpretations of the scripts, taking the material and elevating the drama with distinctive approaches. Directors will apply with a description of the vision for the film along with a look book and an explanation as to what they’d bring to the material. This opportunity is aimed at new filmmakers with exciting approaches to composition, performance, tone, sound and visuals that bring a new dimension to the material.
Selected Directors will then have group sessions with industry guests and one-to-one mentoring with Film Hub North Talent Executives. Session and mentoring will cover subjects such as stylistic approach, casting, and the pre-production period. This will be followed by a practical event where we’ll look to shoot the scripts with a small crew to get hands-on experience of directing.
Applications for Stage 2 will open in the Winter.
