Our Bursary Fund helps film exhibitors access training opportunities, improve their skills, and boost confidence.
Bursaries are all about getting you where you need to be. If your organisation has training needs or specific development ambitions, our Bursary Fund could help you realise them. Once you find an event or training scheme that works for you, apply for support from us to cover your travel, ticket, and accommodation expenses.
Training opportunities supported through the fund should equip your organisation with the skills and experience to contribute to a vibrant film culture in the North. Funding is available for in-person or remote learning, and we welcome applications from both staff and volunteers working in film exhibition. Support of up to £500 is available, per organisation per annum.
You can apply at any time, just be sure to submit your request form at least two weeks in advance of your chosen event or course date. We aim to provide feedback on your request within five working days, letting you arrange logistics as soon as possible.
Read our funding guidelines for more information on the support available, the fund's aims, and its eligibility criteria.
A plain text version of these guidelines is available to download below.

Isobel Harrop, Showroom Cinema Attended CICAE Arthouse Cinema Training
Showroom Cinema is an independent cinema, café bar and creative workspace in Sheffield. CICAE Arthouse Cinema Training is a one-week intensive programme bringing together arthouse exhibition professionals from around to world to gain in-depth insight into the management of a movie theatre.
The theme of the CICAE Arthouse Cinema Training this summer was “Restarting Your Cinema”. Here at Showroom, we are going through a number of changes as we head towards our 30th anniversary in 2025 – including rebrand, fresh website, and newly appointed CEO – the lessons learned over this week in Berlin will be invaluable as we approach making positive changes that celebrate our heritage and our future in the new year.
Anna Henderson, The Bay International Film Festival Attended BFI FAN CON - Connecting the BFI Film Audience Network
The Bay International Film Festivalis an annual film festival with live cinema screenings and awards, running in Morecambe. BFI FAN CON is a conference for BFI FAN members across the UK to meet, share experiences and professional practice, and consider new approaches to the wider industry issues.
Attending BFI FAN CON has been transformative for both myself and The Bay International Film Festival. The knowledge, connections, and inspiration gained will significantly impact our approach to festival organisation and community engagement. I've connected with programmers from other festivals for potential film exchanges, exhibitors who might join us for special screenings, and industry professionals who can provide guidance as we grow.
Theodora Rintoul, Unthinkable Film Festival Hull CIO Attended Aesthetica Film Festival
Unthinkable is a Hull based short-film festival. Aesthetica Short Film Festival is an international film festival which takes place annually in York.
As a festival that has just completed our second year running, it was incredible to experience an established festival so close to us. We’ve learnt what does and doesn’t work in terms of accessibility that we can apply to our own festival. We made connections with industry professionals that offered advice for our own festival that is invaluable. Everything we experienced and learnt in just one day can be applied to Unthinkable and develop it considerably for next year, and the years to come.
