Funding available

Up to £15,000 for production costs
Supporting shorts up to 15mins

Dates and deadlines

Applications open: 26 April 2021
Applications close: 7 June 2021

Short Film Funding supports Directors based in the North who are working on fiction shorts in both live action and animation.

Funding grants will contribute towards the production costs of short films and are supplemented by the creative oversight of our Talent Executives.

Support is available for short films that bring new voices to the screen, provide a space for experimentation and showcase the talent of the filmmakers involved. In addition to helping with production costs, we’ll assist by providing advice prior to and during production, and will work with you to maximise the impact of your completed film through festival strategies, exhibition opportunities and industry exposure.

Projects supported by Short Film Funding will be original ideas rather than adaptations of existing material. Films can be up to fifteen minutes in length and should work as standalone titles - though this can include projects that have the potential to be developed into other forms or formats.

How to apply

Applications for Short Film Funding are made via the BFI’s grant request platform. Before you can proceed with your application, you will be asked to log in or create and account.

Applications for the Spring 2021 funding round open on Monday, 26 April 2021 and close on Monday, 7 June 2021. You should hear the result of your application by the end of September 2021.
