Magic Lantern was Sheffield's first pop up cinema club, with the motto "Experience Cinema Anywhere!"

Founded by three movie addict mavericks as an alternative to mainstream cinema spaces, our aim has always been to share the films we love in an intimate setting in some interesting places. Over the last five years we've shown an average of a film a month, sometimes themed, usually with an informal social element. Films tend to be on the cult /arthouse spectrum with a dash of cool classics. We've done Chaplin on 16mm at Kelham Island, "Viridiana" with Spanish tapas and music, a secret cinema outdoor screening of "Creature From the Black Lagoon" complete with 3D glasses, and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" in a bike yard with sunset cycling races; but our main emphasis is on simply watching great films in good company.

Look out for other film related events too such as our DVD swap market stall and celebration of home movies. Recently we've found a temporary home in the cute mini cinema at Picture House Social but we'll continue to pop up in other places too. Want to join us?
