Funny Features is Glasgow Film Festival’s new development programme for teams developing a first or second comedy feature film. Supported through BFI’s Creative Challenge Fund the programme is open to creators in the North of England along with Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
How does it work?
The programme is to support writers or writer/directors and producers to develop projects with a twin track of developing both the creative elements of the project and the market potential of the film.
Over 6 months teams will gain access to one-to-one consultancy sessions, online workshops and mentoring. This will be a rare opportunity for comedy projects to be developed in a constructive and practical development environment where they will be able to participate in peer-to-peer and professional feedback. The programme will offer script development, audience consultancy, pitching, financing workshops and mentoring before a pitching session to prospective funders. Teams will leave Funny Features with extensive knowledge of the film finance landscape, a widened network of decision-makers, a final draft of their script and a project ready to enter the international marketplace.
Participants will be paid for their time on the scheme; in workshops, consultancies, and meetings.
Who is it for?
To be eligible for Funny Features, you must apply as a creative team which includes a producer and writer (or writer/director). You can apply if you already have a director attached, however, they will not be able to participate in the lab sessions. Applications from individuals will not be accepted. At least one member of the team must have made at least three short films, two of which must have been commissioned.
Funny Features is actively encouraging applications from underrepresented groups, including but not limited to, those from the global majority, LGBTQIA+ people, those who identify as a gender minority and/or those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
The BFI National Lottery Creative Challenge Fund aims to decentralise project development in a way that is complementary to our typical development support. It will support organisations to run creative development programmes, such as labs and workshops series, to stimulate a healthier, wider ecosystem in which emerging UK filmmakers can develop new projects.
