FHN x NFTS: Director Training

Developing the next generation of visual storytellers

Published: 01 Apr 2022

A brand-new hands-on director training scheme from the National Film & Television School (NFTS) and Film Hub North

To support the development of 8 directors in the north, Film Hub North (FHN) and NFTS, from their hub in Leeds, are launching FHN x NFTS Director Training, a programme to develop a next generation of visual storytellers. The programme is designed to give new and early career directors hands on training and experience that’s as close as possible to being on set. Directors rarely get the chance to practice their skills outside of the pressure of making a film so this programme offers the opportunity to learn, experiment and hone your craft.
The programme takes place over three days and will be a mix of practical and theoretical activities. Theoretical sessions will cover topics including breaking down a script, planning a shoot, the casting process, working with your team and finding your voice. The practical sessions will see a DOP, editor and actors join the programme to shoot a scene.
The programme takes place Wed 22 June – Fri 24 June at NFTS in Leeds. The cost of the course is covered by Film Hub North as is accommodation. You’ll be expected to cover the cost of travel unless this prohibits your attendance on the course in which case we can support your travel costs.

Who It's For

The programme is designed for early career filmmakers who already have some creative experience of directing through self-initiated narrative film, commercial work, or education and are looking to professionalise their craft and build on their experience to date. The ideal candidate will be actively working towards a career as a film director and be able to identify how the course fits into their career development.
We would also welcome applications from theatre directors, writers, actors, DOP’s or editors who have significant experience in their roles and are actively looking to move in to directing.
Participants must be over 18 and not in full time education.
