Join us for a member session exploring class and socioeconomic barriers for cinema audiences.

With working class representation low across cinema audiences as well as the production and exhibition workforce, important voices and perspectives are being lost. Opportunities for people to fall in love with film: to tell their stories and share experiences with others, are being missed. Improving diversity when it comes to class is an important route for ensuring a sustainable and inclusive industry: but where do we start? This session will look at class and socioeconomic barriers for cinema audiences, and ways placemaking approaches can be used to support outreach and initiatives that are grounded in addressing needs, wants and barriers.

With Linnea Pettersson (FAN Socioeconomic Champion) and Catherine Mugonyi (Aunty Social).

Linnea Pettersson is a freelancer working in cinema and film exhibition. She has spent a decade working in curation, audience development and project management, with a focus on schools and young audiences. She is currently working on projects aimed at improving access for people facing barriers to cinema, as well as developing campaigns and events to support upcoming film releases to reach underserved audiences and communities.

Catherine Mugonyi is a Director and founder of Aunty Social, a voluntary arts organisation that provides accessible, participatory arts activities on Lancashire’s Fylde Coast. Catherine specialises in organising and coproducing events and projects that strengthen engagement between marginalised communities, local history and the arts.
