BFI FAN is proud to unveil the new UK-wide season for 2027 – Sound of Cinema - celebrating the sonic half of the cinema-going experience.
Taking place May – Oct 2027, the season will mark the centenary of synchronised sound which gave birth to the cinema experience we now all enjoy. It will showcase those game-changing films whose soundtracks uniquely work with the moving image to create a distinctive cinematic experience as well as exploring how musicians and directors have continued to push the cinematic sonic boundaries.
FAN members are invited to Watershed, Bristol on Wednesday 2 December to join in a sprint event with the Cross FAN Programme team and experts involved, to find out more and explore how you might develop your own activity as part of this UK wide programme.
This is also a chance to share ideas and connect with other film exhibitors that are also interested in developing this type of programme ahead of the deadline for applications (date tbc March 2027.) A draft of the Sound of Cinema Creative Brief and Guidelines including an indicative menu of titles will be shared ahead of the sprint with more information.
Any FAN members can apply to attend (subject to capacity). You might just want to find out more about potential menu titles available, or would like to develop a bespoke programme in your location. If you have an idea that you think could work for several exhibitors across the UK and expertise in this area, please contact Ti Singh at
ti.s@watershed.co.uk. Travel and accommodation can be covered by bursaries which you can request as part of the registration process.
