Sheffield’s short film night celebrates its 100th edition

Published: 17 Apr 2023

A day of shorts, talks and celebrations as Showroom Shorts hits its century.

Showroom Shorts, the beloved short film night based out of Sheffield’s Showroom Cinema, is celebrating its 100th edition on Tuesday 18 April 2023. Since starting out in 2011, the event has grown from a gathering for a few dozen local filmmakers into an essential entry in South Yorkshire’s filmmaking calendar and one of the UK’s longest-running regular short film showcases.
For the event’s 100th edition, co-producers South Yorkshire Filmmakers’ Network and Showroom Cinema, are delivering the biggest Showroom Shorts yet. In addition to their usual evening screening in Showroom’s Café Bar, Showroom Shorts will be taking over two cinema screens throughout the day, bringing a range of screenings and talks to local filmmakers and wider audiences.
Support for Showroom Shorts’ ambitious centenary plans comes from National Lottery funding via Film Hub North’s Film Exhibition Fund - Pitch Pot.

I’ve been so proud of hosting Showroom Shorts over the years, and I’ve really enjoyed seeing the event evolve over time. There’s an enormous audience for short films these days, with more and more people embracing the format - and I can’t wait to celebrate the 100th screening on the 18th of April. It’s going to be a very special event. - Rob Speranza, South Yorkshire Filmmakers’ Network

Programme highlights include two “best of” selections from the event’s rich back catalogue and a screening of BFI Film Academy productions, which will showcase the opportunities open to young people keen to learn more about film.
Film Hub North’s Talent Development Team are getting involved too: BFI NETWORK Talent Executive Ben Taylor will give a talk on short film funding and career development, and we’re hosting an informal mixer event to kick-off the evening line-up.
