Supporting Serenity Screenings to showcase the cinema of Africa and the African diaspora in Sheffield and beyond.

Serenity Screenings is one of Sheffield’s newest community cinema organisations. Formed in late 2020 and due to host their first public programme in June 2021, Serenity are setting out to showcase the cinema of African and the African diaspora to audiences across the North of England.
They kick-off their programme on 19 June at SADACCA, the Sheffield and District African Caribbean Community Association, and will continue to screen in Sheffield throughout Summer, with follow up events planned in West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester later in the year. Support for Serenity’s opening season comes from a National Lottery grant through Film Hub North’s Propeller Awards.
For their inaugural event, Serenity are putting the spotlight on Ghana with a programme of shorts and a main feature celebrating some of the most exciting filmmaking talent emerging from the country.
Shorts selections include Da Yie, Anthony Nti’s Clermont-Ferrand Grand Prix winning story of gang life and vulnerable young people; and Surf Ghana, a documentary about Skate Gal Club – an all-female skate collective connecting and empowering women in Ghana. The programme’s main event comes courtesy of Gold Coast Lounge, a stylish crime drama that fuses its scenario of criminal power tussles in post-independence Ghana with the trappings of vintage Hollywood noir to intriguing effect.
