for your heritage organisation

BFI and BFI FAN are partnering with Historic England to deliver online Carbon Literacy courses for FAN exhibitors across the Nations and Regions.

Historic England, and Heritage Building and Places (amenity society) have developed a heritage led carbon literacy course, which is now being rolled out to heritage organisations.

Carbon Literacy is a great early step for people in heritage to start thinking about the changes we all need to make to reduce our carbon emissions.

This is an entry level, action focused, carbon reduction training, developed especially for the Heritage sector. The course looks at the science behind the climate emergency, the impacts on Heritage, the policy positions nationally and internationally, and the co-benefits for Heritage in making changes, as well as examples of Low Carbon Heritage.

The interactive online course takes place over two days, via Zoom, with a small bit of homework to do before the first session. At the end of the course, you will be asked to make two carbon reduction pledges, and in return will be certified as Carbon Literate.

Course structure

Session 1: Wednesday 11 February 2026, 10:00 - 13:30
Session 2: Thursday 26 February 2026, 10:00 - 13:30

You need to attend both sessions in order to complete the course and receive your Carbon Literacy Certificate.

The course is free, but there is a £10 fee to cover the cost of the Carbon Literacy Certificate you will receive upon completion of the course.
