Bradford Refugee Week

Supporting Artworks Creative Communities through our Propeller Awards

Putting film front and centre at Bradford Refugee Week with support from our micro-grant scheme.

Artworks Creative Communities are using film to explore the different pasts and shared futures of Bradford’s diverse refugee communities as part of Bradford Refugee Week 2019 (15-23 June). The film programme, supported by a micro-grant through our Propeller Awards, reaches out to Bradford’s refugee groups directly through event co-promotion with individual communities, use of local grassroots venues and by exploring stories that will be immediately familiar to some of the refugees that call Bradford home.

Participants in a local refugee allotment project will tour Horton Community Farm and Lidget Green Healthy Living Centre before settling in for a screening of Grow Your Own, a culture-clash comedy about the tensions that arise between a community of local gardeners and a group of green-fingered refugees. And the Sundanese Community in Bradford will co-present and contextualise Beats of the Antonov, a powerful documentary exploring how traditional music forms have been mobilised as an act of resistance against the repeated bombing of Darfur.
Artworks’ screenings continue their ongoing commitment to community-based collaboration and strengthen the place of film in a wide-ranging Refugee Week programme, celebrating cinema’s unique power to bring us together to consider society’s most pressing issues.
