Looking back on 2019

Celebrating cinema successes across the North

Published: 16 Dec 2019

Supporting industry, championing local talent, screening great film.

As 2019 draws to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the difference the Hub and its partners have made since our launch in April 2018. With more data to hand, projects completed and films wrapped, we’re now in a position to share an overview of our community's successes from the Hub's first full year of operation.
Our new 2018-19 Report does just that. It tells the story of our evolving approach to nurturing film culture in the North, the enthusiasm of exhibitors and filmmakers across the region, and our intention to build on this strong start. You’ll read about how the Hub has invested almost £400,000 in the region’s exhibition and production sectors; and how these projects have resulted in over 100,000 cinema admissions, hundreds of career development opportunities and a dozen short films from the North’s new wave of creative talent. For the full story, download the report below.

We hope the 2018-19 Report makes for heartening reading and vindicates the hard work of our collaborators in engaging audiences, developing skills and creating exciting new work. The Hub team’s thanks, as ever, go to the partners who make this work possible: our funders at the BFI and National Lottery; our industry colleagues; and the exhibitors and filmmakers who contribute to a growing, thriving film network in the North.
We’re winding down for 2019 but – buoyed by the creativity and community we've seen in recent months – we'll be returning in January more energised than ever. There are exciting projects on the horizon and new funding opportunities coming soon. Roll credits on 2019, watch this space for 2020.

The Hub has hit the ground running and is already making a difference to exhibitors, filmmakers and audiences in the North. Regionally led sector development is essential to the future of grassroots film culture and the Hub is well placed to serve as a vocal champion of local talent and creativity. We’re excited to build on the progress made so far and to continue to grow a support network for the North that is greater than the sum of its parts. Holli Keeble, CEO at Tyneside Cinema
