New audience development funding launched
Three schemes to help restart the exhibition sector

New support for archive film, long-term organisational growth and film programmes to inspire hope.

We’re excited to share news of three new funding schemes that will support a range of exhibition activity, both in the North and across the UK, at a crucial time for the sector.

This trio of opportunities – New Directions, the Engine Fund and Film Feels Hopeful – will help exhibitors celebrate the past, present and future of independent filmmaking. Funding is available to support archive film events, the long-term recovery of established film organisations in the North, and an upcoming nationwide season spotlighting hopeful narratives and new cinematic voices.

You can read more about the recently launched funds and how to get involved below. If you’d like to discuss these opportunities, or any of the other audience development funds available through Film Hub North, you can book a 1-2-1 Hub Surgery now.

New Directions

What is it? A new, UK-wide programme supporting archive film events and repertory feature screenings that connect the past with the present.

Supported projects will retrace the historic steps that have brought the UK to its current political and cultural crossroads. While audiences will be given the chance to reconsider contemporary issues through the lens of archive film.

How much is available? Funding of up to £10,000 is available to support one-off programmes. Funding of up to £15,000 is available to support national projects.

When can I apply? Applications for one-off programme close on 10 September 2021. Applications for national projects close on 16 July 2021. All supported activity should take place between July – November 2021.

Engine Fund

What is it? Long-term, strategic support to help exhibitors in the North rebuild and grow audiences for British, international and independent film.

Support through the Engine Fund is bespoke to your organisational plans and audiences’ needs, and can go towards a range of projects – from piloting new ticketing schemes to embedding young people and local communities within your work.

How much is available? Funding of up to £30,000 is available for large-scale projects that have the potential to reach significant audience numbers.

When can I apply? Applications close on 1 September 2021. All supported activity should take place between June 2021 – March 2022.

Film Feels Hopeful

What is it? A new, UK-wide season of film from our colleagues at Film Hub Midlands. Film Feels Hopeful will support programmes that inspire hope and create space for new cinematic voices.

Looking for inspiration? We’re biased, but we think the exciting short form work supported by the BFI is a great place to start. Take a look at our slate and the new showreel from BFI NETWORK.

How much is available? Funding of up to £5,000 is available for programmes that offer audiences something more than just a screening – be that in person, online or both.

When can I apply? Applications close on 28 May 2021. All supported activity should take place between 14 June – 31 August 2021.
