Returning for its seventh edition from 7-11 November, Aesthetica Short Film Festival is one of the North's major film events, a key stop in the international shorts circuit and a widely respected showcase for exciting emerging voices. We're excited, then, to have our BFI NETWORK team play a significant part in this year's industry strand - running various events, from masterclasses on writing funding applications to informal lunches connecting the production and exhibition sectors.

We're particularly proud to develop our relationship with the festival further in 2018 through the Film Hub North Filmmaker Award. This new partnership between the festival and the Hub will recognise a shortlist of six filmmakers featured in the Official Selection who are based in the North and who fully justify our optimistic outlook on the future of the region's developing talent.

Take a look at our festival schedule below for a list of where to find us at Aesthetica. We look forward to seeing you there and to sharing the North's most exciting shorts with audiences.

Festival Schedule

Filmmaker Meet Market

A unique melting pot bringing together UK-based producers and some of the North's brightest writing and directing talent as identified by our team. The Meet Market will allow producers, directors and writers to hold one-to-one meetings to discuss upcoming projects with fellow creatives.

1331 Bar & Restaurant - 8 November, 14:00 - 17:00

Masterclass: Nurturing New Talent

Our Talent Executives Jess Loveland and Alice Ramsey will host a masterclass on the theme of "nurturing new talent." The discussion will touch upon the early feature development and short film support available through BFI NETWORK, and Jess and Alice will be on-hand to give advice on crafting successful funding applications and building new collaborative networks.

York St John - 9 November, 11:30 - 12:30

Pitching Sessions

New for 2018, the festival is offering a selection of filmmakers the chance to pitch their feature and short film projects to industry professionals. This session will give filmmakers the opportunity to  share their latest ideas with our team and discuss how BFI NETWORK might support them.

York St John - 10 November, 11:00 - 13:00

Programmers' Lunch

Our team will welcome the filmmakers shortlisted for the Film Hub North Filmmaker Award for an informal lunch where they will have the chance to meet with programmers from across the UK, chat about cinema and ask what makes a film stand out from the crowd.

1331 Bar & Restaurant - 10 November, 13:30 - 15:00

Awards Ceremony

The festival closes with the Awards Ceremony, which this year will also celebrate the inaugural winner of the Film Hub North Filmmaker Award. Of the six shortlisted short films, one writer or director based in the North of England will receive the opportunity to develop a new project with editorial and professional development support from our team.

Yorkshire Museum - 11 November, 16:30 - 19:00
